Spence's solid technical background, strong yet unimposing persona and his high ethical standards made him the consummate professional; an employers dream. He was respectful, respected, productive, diligent, committed, knowledgeable, dedicated and too much of a perfectionist at times. Spence was a nerd; he knew it and was proud of it!

He seemed quiet to many, even shy and very private but how could an April Fools baby not have a sense of humor? Not everyone got to experience his wicked humorous side, the practical joker. He chose who got to know that part of him but when the April Fool came out, you had to watch out! Spence had a fantastic infectious laugh and a huge ear to ear grin that took over his entire face. It was irresistible and unavoidable.
Spence T. Brennan worked for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Southeast Regional Office, Lakeville, MA from 1986 - 2002. He worked on the Right-to-Know Program, Emergency Response, Strike Force and the Regional Enforcement and Compliance Team (REACT). He became the Section Chief of REACT which handled cases involving violations of numerous environmental regulations. He loved the challenge compiling a multi-media case posed. Working with the REACT members he absorbed regulations (using his highlighter) involving wetlands, air emissions, solid waste, hazardous waste etc. He drew from his Emergency Response field experience.

On August 11,2002, Spence responded to a grounded fishing vessel on South Beach in Chatham, MA as the on-call representative for MassDEP Emergency Response. His sudden death was a shock for all who knew him. This man loved life, he loved what he was doing.

The establishment of the Spence T. Brennan Foundation and the awarding of scholarships, allows him to live on…

Spence never stopped learning. He was always researching something on the internet or reading manuals and regulations to increase his understanding of whatever the topic. He always used a highlighter to absorb information. It was usually yellow, but he actually highlighted some regulations in 4 different colors. He was also a techno geek; loved his palm pilot. He probably has a blackberry now. The research topics weren't always work related. He was a real Mr. Fix It. - master of home and yard projects. If he didn't know how, he learned how.
